Turning 65 and wondering how to apply for Medicare Part A and Part B? Don’t worry—you’re not alone! At Ellen Daniels Agency, we know that the process can seem a little overwhelming at first, but we’re here to help make it easier for you. Let’s walk through everything you need to know about applying for Medicare, with clear steps and tips to help you get the coverage you need.
If you haven’t already, check out our blog on “Understanding the Basics of Medicare” where we walk through what Medicare Part A & Part B both actually cover.
For many, Part A is automatically available once you turn 65 if you or your spouse have worked and paid Medicare taxes. Part B, on the other hand, usually requires you to sign up separately.
Step 1: Am I Eligible for Medicare?
You’re probably wondering if you qualify for Medicare. Here’s a quick checklist:
- You’re 65 or older.
- You’re a U.S. citizen or legal resident for at least five years.
- You or your spouse have worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years.
If you already receive Social Security benefits, you’ll be automatically enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B when you turn 65. If you don’t get Social Security yet, you’ll need to sign up for Medicare yourself.
Step 2: Understanding Your Enrollment Periods
There are a few important windows when you can apply for Medicare, so let’s take a quick look at them:
- Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): This is the ideal time to sign up! It’s a 7-month window that starts three months before your 65th birthday, includes the month you turn 65, and ends three months after. If you sign up during this time, you won’t face any penalties.
- General Enrollment Period (GEP): Sometimes referred to as Open Enrollment Period (OEP). If you miss the IEP, don’t worry! You can sign up between January 1 and March 31 each year. Just know that if you enroll here, your coverage won’t begin until July 1, and you may face a late enrollment penalty.
- Special Enrollment Period (SEP): If you’re still working and covered by an employer’s insurance, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. This gives you extra time to sign up for Part B without penalties, as long as you’re working and have insurance.
Step 3: Gather Your Information
Before you apply, make sure you have these key details ready:
- Your Social Security number (if you’re not yet enrolled in Social Security).
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency.
- Your birthdate and personal information.
- If you’re still working, have details about your current health insurance coverage.
Step 4: Apply for Medicare A & B
Ready to apply? You can do it in a few different ways:
- Online: The easiest and quickest way is through the official Medicare website at www.medicare.gov. The site will guide you through the whole process.
- By Phone: Not a fan of online applications? Call the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY users can call 1-800-325-0778) to apply by phone.
- In Person: You can also visit your local Social Security office to apply in person. If you do this, it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment to avoid waiting too long.
Step 5: Explore Your Medicare Options
After signing up for Part A and Part B, you might want to consider additional coverage options:
- Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage): This is a private insurance plan that combines Part A and Part B and often includes extra benefits like prescription drug coverage.
- Medicare Part D: A stand-alone prescription drug plan to cover your medications.
- Medigap (Supplemental Insurance): Helps fill in the “gaps” left by Medicare, like coinsurance and copayments.
At Ellen Daniels Agency, we offer Medicare plans to help you find the right coverage options. We can help guide you through the process of selecting the best Medicare plans for your needs, ensuring you have the coverage you deserve.
Step 6: Confirm Your Coverage
Once you’ve applied, you’ll receive your Medicare card in the mail. It will list your Part A and Part B coverage details. Be sure to check the information for accuracy. If anything looks wrong, reach out to Medicare or Social Security to straighten it out.
